炎舞II - Joy Huang 玻璃創作展

  歐洲被認為是每個玻璃創作者的聖地,更在悠久的玻璃產業歷史演化下,在國際玻璃界保有特殊的地位。在那遙遠的歐洲城市中,卻有一位來自臺灣的女子,抱著無比的雄心大聲的呼喊:「英國我來了!」。Joy Huang-黃瓊儀1996年受到國際玻璃藝術大師Chihuly的作品影響,結束了經營7年的個人陶藝工作室,到英國Brierley Hill International Glass Center,開始學習各種有關玻璃的專業製作技巧以及玻璃工作室的設備運作與玻璃藝術創作;經過一年的專業訓練後,更獲得最佳技術成就獎(Colin Gill Memorial Award)。
  1997~2003年間,Joy利用了幾年實際工作與參觀旅行的方式,遊走了許多歐洲國家的玻璃工作室,協助各國工作室進行吹製玻璃的製作,包括英國Greenhalgh Glass 玻璃工作室、英國Isle of Wight Glass 玻璃工作室、德國GLAS HAGEN HUTTE玻璃工作室、英國Sue Shaw Designer & maker in glass 個人工作室,與英國James Hockey Gallery 藝廊等,直接的學習與體驗玻璃工作室的運作。
  在這期間也利用了兩年的時間回到大學裡,做理論與思維的進修,2001年以榮譽成績畢業於紹綠藝術設計大學玻璃系Surrey Institute Art and Design - University Glass BA (Honors)。其後受邀至世界著名的工作室指導玻璃與陶瓷藝術的創作與製造,其中包括挪威Glass Hytta玻璃工作室、香港熊琉玻璃工作室、泰國鑫盈陶瓷、德國GLAS HAGEN HUTTE玻璃工作室與臺灣琉園水晶博物館,足跡遍及全世界。
  Joy的創作有別於國內一般的玻璃與琉璃工作室,Joy的作品可以融入於中華民族傳統的線條與風格,也可以在以大自然的觀察為素材隱含抽象的意境,更可以在樸實無華的碎形幾何中與生活體驗中,陶鑄為情趣生活之賞玩。這種可以博,亦可以約的特色是近年來玻璃創作所少見的。Joy的創作風格,歸功於她豐富的人生經歷,與廣闊的國際觀,更重要的是她擁有一顆純真、率直的藝術心靈。
  本次展出,盼能以臺灣在地藝術創作者之角色,將國外多年學習的創作紀實在故鄉展出,作品呈現遊走歐洲各國的生活感觸及體驗。其中包含新作『針線情系列』:作品主體是圓潤飽滿的線球,瓶口拉出輕盈流動的絲線,為質感清透、五彩繽紛的作品;以細膩的環境觀察,用針與線的關聯訴說人我之間纏繞不休的爭執,而終有相互依存的圓滿合作。
  2006年Joy回國之後,開始著手計劃在台灣設置一處創作玻璃藝術的空間,希望能藉由這個創作平台與台灣的玻璃藝術愛好一起分享這幾年國外取經的體驗及成果,也更希望能創造機會,將其所學的各種玻璃專業知識與製作技巧秉持著傳承的心薪火相傳地傳遞給新一代的創作者。

期待薪藝傳承

這幾天,琉園博物館來了一群原住民朋友進行琉璃珠教學及鑄造玻璃的學習,去年底他們已經來進行幾天玻璃專業課程,而這次是第二次到訪;二次的相遇,對臺灣原住民文化非常喜歡的Joy漸漸與他們熟悉,每次的交集就會發現這一群成員包括阿美族(美英)、排灣族、達悟族(飛魚)…等的原住民朋友,彼此相互扶持不管是在工作上、生活上,反而比我們還共生相融。反觀,我們現在所處的環境,雖不在職場上仍感受到職場間的假情假意、權利鬥爭。
與琉園的駐館計劃應該會於八月份結束,不管前面用心經營與未來的結果,只期望博物館能以如原住民朋友們開闊胸懷的進駐計劃,持續扶持一些臺灣新一代的玻璃創作者繼續向前;臺灣已經很小了,國際間真正熱愛玻璃這個素材的朋友亦不多,可是在國外的”玻璃圈”反而更彼此提攜;就如臺灣的玻璃產業也漸漸沒落與外移,許多新竹的老師傅們,也感嘆技術傳承與新一代難尋,那此時,不是更應該讓技術可以新舊激盪,讓老一輩專精的技術與新一代的創意結合,用火花去取代斷層。

春浪淚史


經過了 初春的春"浪"音樂節
不知道市集的朋友們後續都怎樣了?
各攤的墾丁血淚行,除天候的不作美、風大雨大
各家場地自辦自個兒的活動,同時在墾丁就有九個活動12個場地演出(哇!我聽到時,也跟你一樣"落"下巴)
活動多、人多、是非也多,但就是創意市集的生意不多
對我們這些創意市集的小攤商而言,的確也學到了一次慘慟的血淚教訓(賺的都還不及交通、住宿費...等開支)
不過也讓想辦創意市集的主辦單位們,也得建議您們好好思考策辦的活動,帶動的是人潮、買氣潮?真的扶植得了當地的觀光發展?還是也只帶來了一堆垃圾潮及負面新聞
不管社會如此爛,我們堅信"青春苦短 創意要盡興無價",持續讓夢發光

Blowing Hot Air - The Art of Glass


Remember those perfect pieces of brightly colored hard candy with colors so beautiful and shiny that your mouth watered just looking at them and your little hand crept out to take one when the grown ups weren’t looking ? And, then they turned out to be glass?

The Tittot Glass Museum is the kind of place that you go to and wonder why you have never been there before. Housed in a converted glassmaking factory, it has everything from exhibitions of glass art from around the world, live demonstrations of glass blowing, and a variety of hands-on classes for all ages. Situated within easy walking distance of Guandu MRT station, the Tittot is a museum that will appeal to the whole family. Glass has a fascinating history. Ever since it was first discovered in 2500 BC, man has sought ways to shape it to create both beautiful and functional objects. From the Egyptian craftsmen in 1500BC, who used the hollow glass production method to make eating vessels, through the development of glass blowing during the first century AD in the Roman Empire, and up to later advances such as the production of glass sheets perfected by Venetian craftsmen in the 13th century, glasswork has become more and more sophisticated and ornate. And while glasswork existed in China at least from the fifth century BC, the traditional Chinese preference for jade meant that it was not the preferred material of artisans. This changed during the Qing dynasty when the Emperor Kang-xi established a glass workshop in his palace in 1696. It was run by a German Jesuit priest, a skilled glassmaker who produced glass works that combined European knowledge with Chinese skills. Similarly, the founder of the Tittot Museum, Heinrich Wang, draws on both Eastern and Western influences to create glass works that are distinctly Taiwanese in flavor.

Heinrich Wang is a household name in Taiwan. After initial forays into acting and directing movies (among other things) he was gradually drawn towards working with glass after being captivated by a glass paperweight. After studying in America, he returned to Taiwan and established the first glass studio, Liuli Gong Fang (New Workshop) and produced glass pieces using the “Lost Wax” method. Wang’s pieces are highly regarded in art circles and are collected by many international museums, including the Beijing National Palace Museum and Britain’s Victoria and Albert Museum of Art and Crafts. He established the Tittot Museum in 1999 as a way to showcase not only Taiwanese glass art, but also international works.

The works of art featured on the second floor of the museum come from around the world. They are testimony to a growing worldwide trend of appreciation and awareness of glass as an artistic medium. Many of the creations are so life-like that it is hard to credit that they are actually made out of glass. Particular favorites of mine are the exquisite paperweights made by Paul J. Stankard, each a tiny garden of flowers, leaves and a dragonfly created within a glass bubble. The second floor also explains the Lost Wax technique used to create all Tittot glass works. This method is a long and painstaking process requiring the creation of a new plaster mold for every individual piece of art. Carefully selected glass is then placed in the mold in a specific order, so that when the mold is placed in a kiln (heated to 850º Centrigrade), the glass melts and fuses together to produce the distinctive Tittot look. Large works can take up to six months to fully cool down.

After visiting the exhibitions upstairs, we were lucky enough during our visit to watch a demonstration by the museum’s resident glass blowing artist, Joy Huang. Born in Kaohsiung, Joy spent many years in Europe, studying and working in the UK, Germany and Norway to perfect her technique. Since her return to Taiwan she has studied aboriginal culture and is trying to incorporate different cultural elements into her works. While she makes many beautiful objects, such as hand-blown glasses and pitchers that are available in the gift shop, Joy’s great love is creating Taiwanese-style glass works of art. It was fascinating to see her in her element in the workshop. We watched her make a handblown glass from scratch, first getting the molten glass out of the kiln, and then shaping, blowing, and finally applying the glaze. Thanks to her travels, Joy is fluent in English and can easily explain the glass blowing process and answer any questions you may have. You may even get called on to give her a hand. On our visit, we helped in the making of glass sticks by stretching out a piece of glass across the length of the workshop. I highly recommend bringing the kids to see a live demonstration - they will be absolutely fascinated.

Forthose who fancy a more hands - on approach, the museum offers a variety of classes, everything from making glass pendants, beads, and paperweights to glass blowing, glass painting, sand blasting and glass slumping. The slumping class involves making and applying decorations to a glass plate, which is then heated and shaped. The classes have age limits depending on the difficulty level and safety requirements, so check with the museum for details. Prices are reasonable and you will have a unique opportunity to create your own work of art. The museum caters to foreign visitors with Englishspeaking staff, and school groups are welcome. Guided tours are available with advance notice, and it is also advisable to inquire prior to visiting about times for live demonstrations. The museum can also be rented out for functions, providing a unique venue for special events. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful,” said William Morris. He could have been talking about glass.

GETTING THERE
The best way to reach the museum is to take the Danshui MrT line
and get off at Guandu station, as parking is not easy to find. The
station is sign-posted from the station exit and is near Guandu wharf,
so a trip to Tittot Museum could easily be combined with a Blue
highway cruise down the river. The museum is open Tuesday to sunday 9-5 (closed Monday).

臺灣琉璃躍國際 新生代表現搶眼


由王俠軍創立的琉園,在國際間發光。最近有一位新生代藝術工作者黃瓊儀加入,他在英國學習琉璃製作長達十年,回到台灣後,就接受琉園的約聘來創作,他的作品融合中西方,東西合壁,讓人眼睛一亮。

九十九顆水滴,訴說的是創作者Joy Huang心中回憶的眼淚。水紋系列激盪出各色的波樣。在歐洲學習吹製玻璃長達十年的Joy,作品特別充滿現代感。帶回西方經驗,返台吹製屬於台灣文化的創作,Joy說台灣原住民系列別具意義,是用原住民的服飾來表現台灣原住民各族群的精神。

回憶當初到英國留學的日子,Joy說當時真大膽,帶著六千英鎊就隻身前往,學費五千英鎊,生活費只剩一千英鎊,換算當時的台幣,大約是五萬三千塊錢,後來是一路靠擺地攤賣創作賺取生活費,而吹製技術也在過程中不斷磨練再磨練。

琉園是王俠軍建立的創作、展示空間,Joy現在是琉園崛起的新生代玻璃藝術工作者。在歐洲接受西方的文化薰陶,Joy返台除了繼續創作也從事教學工作,希望能將吹製玻璃的藝術發揚光大,以台灣文化為創作精神,帶領台灣的玻璃藝術的創作者,推上國際舞台。

炎舞。雙人探戈-Joy Huang個人作品簡述

崛起:
2005年Joy持了夢想回國,開始著手計劃在台灣設置一處創作玻璃藝術的空間,藉由這個舞臺,能與台灣的玻璃藝術愛好者一起分享這幾年在國外的體驗。2006年8月Joy在琉園水晶博物館築起這個夢想,希望由琉園水晶博物館吹製工坊的空間開始創造機會。以蕨起象徵“崛起”期望藉由琉園水晶博物館的扶持,讓更多的青年玻璃創作者,破土而出跨出第一步萌芽茁壯。
三個願望:
作品意念映照出她對吹製玻璃的熱愛,並與Joy執著的信念一般清澈、堅定,Hope希望-讓Glass Studio的模式在臺灣立基,Dream夢想-連結國內玻璃資源網絡,讓新一代的玻璃創作者能有場域給他們發光,Expect期待-玻璃工匠傳統與現代的承先啟後。
在作品的製作上,以窯製玻璃為主體並串加噴砂玻璃瓶,Joy選擇以酒瓶為主材料是因作品發想於2005年回臺灣後第一個駐村點-駁二藝術特區,位於高雄港口區附近酒吧林立為最易取得的媒材。使用敲碎的玻璃片燒熔保留部份尖銳的型狀,最為表達回臺灣後感受到玻璃藝術推廣環境的不足,其中仍圍繞包裏她完整的夢想。
臺灣原住民服飾編織系列:
原住民編織服飾系列的作品表現上,Joy選擇了以一個長筒型做為這個系列的基底,來詮釋原住民簡樸生活態度與堅定的心靈信仰,在作品的製作上,融合了窯製玻璃以及吹製玻璃技巧,先以窯製玻璃的技巧,在表面製做出原住民編織服飾特色,再與吹製玻璃做不同的組合來表現不同族群的精神,這個表現方法如同各族原住民編織服飾裡的拼貼、夾織和刺繡技巧。
在不斷的製作與收集資料的過程中,到目前為止已發展出以台灣原住民族群名稱為命名的排灣系列、達悟系列、精神系列、阿美系列與布農系列。

玻璃嬰粟花:
Joy隻身前往德國旅行學習的日子,一場風雨吹殘了窗外的罌粟花。飄搖著,卻在風雨後,殘損但然挺立綻放,令Joy想起了自己的處境。所以嘗試著做了玻璃花的創作,將其淬練成型後再敲碎。使花朵看起來脆弱而殘敗,實際上晶瑩剔透且挺立,一如她在國外學習吹製玻璃的心境。
99顆水滴:
1996~2006年,Joy Huang為追求玻璃精緻剔透之美,以居遊的方式於歐洲各國進行吹製玻璃學習之旅。學習、創作、工作、體驗生活,曾因昂貴的學費馬不停蹄地於課餘時間兼了多份差,假日還得不斷創作,拿到市集上賣。水滴造型的吹製玻璃作品,就如心中回憶的眼淚,她說:「每個地方,都會碰到一些可愛的人,也遇過快樂、悲傷的事情,但它使我的生命更加豐富,也就值得了。」
針線情系列:
為臺灣原住民服飾編織系列作品的延申,作品主體是圓潤飽滿的線球,瓶口拉出輕盈流動的絲線,為質感清透、五彩繽紛的作品。以細膩的環境觀察,用針與線的關聯訴說人我之間纏繞不休的爭執,而終有相互依存的圓滿合作。
水紋:
她的旅行歷程,是張流浪的地圖。是為找尋傳說中的打火石,來引燃那,即將爆裂的能量;玩火自焚燒得一身傷,並非想成為一隻浴火鳳凰,只是憨厚的想照亮後面的路。
Joy盼能將多年歷程累積的收獲如水滴舞落在臺灣玻璃藝術領域,激盪出各色波漾。

Prospectus of this exhibition
 Since it was established in 1999, Tittot Glass Art Museum have already invited several international famous glass art masters to come to exhibit their articles in Taiwan. We hope more people here can experience the new world of glass. It was 7 years past. Some people say “seven-year itch” and it is time to come back and dazzle the growing fruits of our own people. Now, we are inviting two artists who have very close connections with tittot to dance with us.
 Frank and Joy were the earlier working fellows of tittot. They all hope to become a glass artist. Via traveling or tuition, they keep on going this way by their own methods. After years past by, they all return their home ~ tittot, and present the experiences and growing of these years via their own glass articles. They let the glass culture of Taiwan keep on running and running.
 Frank is good at glass blowing and casting. In this exhibition, he took the inspiration when he painted the nude sketch in the studio. He applied the techniques of blowing and casting to the most original shapes of life ~ EGG SHAPE, and combined with the most beautiful lines of human body to reach a dialogue fulfilled with living power. The round body with deep colors made his articles with his own humor and steady. Simple but varied curves made the bodies just like landscape of mountains and water that fulfilled tolerated spaces and thinking.
 Joy is good at glass blowing and fusing. Though she was living abroad for many years, her artworks are still going back to the most beautiful character in Taiwan ~the aborigine culture. She combined the western style of many years living abroad with primitive attitude of living and interior belief came from aborigine. Then, she combined the knitting of aborigine with very close connections of human emotions. It presented the stable passion of fire and shadow.

Brief introduction of artists
Joy Huang
Born in 1965, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. 10-year glass working experience in foreign countries made Joy have excellent glass blowing techniques. She was influenced by the artworks of international glass artist ~ Chihuly, and quitted her personal pottery studio, then went to U.K. to learn glass art teaching. She got the best technique award ~ Colin Gill Memorial Award. She had been to different glass studios in Norway, U.K., H.K., Japan, Thailand, Germany, New Zealand, and also tittot in Taiwan. In these countries, she kept on creating and teaching. Multi-cultures and different arts had brought different impacts. And these kept on stimulating Joy to find out which culture can become the representative of Taiwan. Then, she studied the aborigine culture and challenged the Taiwanese style glass artworks. She had integrated the honor and pride of the aborigine into the Taiwanese style glass artworks. Her articles had been presented and collected by museums of Europe for several times.
